Inspiring employees to stay motivated once they have been at the company for a long time can be difficult for some employers. There are many creative ways to improve company culture within the organization, but will that be enough to keep employees around? Is money the best way to keep employee engagement and motivation? Let’s explore!
Many studies have been conducted throughout the years about what motivates employees. Most of the results have come back confusing and complicated because we’re all humans with different wants and needs. For most employees, the money isn’t as important as you would expect.
To keep a group of employees engaged and encouraged they need both tangibles and intangibles. In order to really get to the root of your employee’s happiness takes more than a competitive salary. Once you have met your worker’s basic needs met both intrinsic and extrinsic motivators are necessary.
Paying your employees can become complicated, as employees use their compensation to deduce their value to the company and how that compares to other employees around them.
Aside from competitive compensation, benefits and other incentives can be vital to keeping your talent at your company. Good benefits like paid time off, 401k programs, and insurance attribute to an even better feeling of safety and security for your employees. You can also offer perks like casual dress, fitness centers, bring your pets to work, employee appreciation lunches, etc. There are many creative ways to increase your incentives for your em[ployees.
Another way to ensure that your employees are happy and successful in their roles is to make sure that your company is the right fit for that specific employee and they are able to utilize their talents in their work. When employees do a good job, be sure to provide credit where credit is due.
To foster a great company culture, you can create a collaborative environment that keeps people accountable for their work. You can implement a feedback system where each employee gets a chance to offer feedback to the company as a whole as well as receive feedback for their work. If you listen and respond to their feedback they will feel trusted and connected to the company.
Give your employees an opportunity to contribute to a greater good. Give them goals to work toward bigger company goals and make them feel part of a whole. If you allow opportunities for them to learn new skills and grow within the company they will feel they are gaining something from being there. Define the larger company goals by being open about the vision of the company and the potential for future growth. If you allow your employees to be invested you give them a reason to stay.
While the initial offer may attract your future employee from choosing your company, the benefits and incentives you offer throughout their career will keep them around. These incentives don’t have to be super pricey and complicated, simple acts of gratitude to make your employees feel important and included can sometimes do the trick. Listen to your employees and care for their specific needs and you will find your employees will want to stay.
